Ethnic Gem: Terrence Jennings
Title: Financial Advisor, Assistant Vice President, Merrill Edge
State: New Haven, CT
Growing up in Bridgeport, CT can be a challenge for any one, but especially if you are a young Black Male. Introducing Terrence Jennings, Bridgeport native who carved out a successful life as a Financial Solutions Advisor, Assistant Vice President at Merrill Edge Advisory Center for the state of CT.
This Hofstra University grad that double majored in accounting and marketing, is currently armed with his series 66 and series 7 license, which are major accomplishments in his field, it allows him to do what he does as a financial advisor. We asked Terrence, what was his motivation to choose his current profession? His reply was “seeing a need that wasn’t being provided to the middle class and wanting to be the person that could make a powerful and positive impact for my community”
While being inspired by Robert Kiyosaki, the founder of the Rich Dad Company, a private financial education company that provides personal finance and business education to people through books and videos, we also learned that basketball great Kobe Bryant was also one of his invisible mentors. Terrence explained it this way “I patterned my business approach after Kobe’s aggressive passionate work ethic. As a financial advisor, I am very disciplined, passionate and I do a lot of work for free, to ensure I add value to client’s financial well-being, like Kobe did on the basketball court.” Sounds like a winning combination to me!
We asked Terrence what types of investments he does and how much does one have to invest? “There’s nothing that I cannot offer as a Merrill Lynch advisor, one of the perks for working for one of the biggest commercial Banks in the country is a vast amount of resources. So we offer mutual funds, stock’s bonds but what is very important that most people don’t receive is a holistic approach to finances that consist of cash flow planning, asset allocation planning and retirement planning. It’s not just investing but it’s sound financial counsel for our clients and their children.” Terrence explains “you can have a minimum of $1,000.00 dollars and he promises to maximize your initial investment!”
To help Terrence stay sharp, focused and connected he belongs to the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce; and serves on the Diversity and Inclusion Sub-Committee: Junior Achievement. Staying grounded is essential for Terrence, so you can find him sharpening his business acumen and skills by reading, volunteering and networking at many professional and social events throughout CT.
We asked Terrence where he see himself in 5 years. “In the next 5 years, I want to do more in the community as a servant in the areas of spirituality and business. Meaning, I want to get to a place spiritually where I can be more of a leader and a better role model. Business wise, I want to use my experience to help others via speaking and writing articles or perhaps even a book”
