When it comes to “leading by example,” the person to watch is Sharron Rowlett-Moore. Sharron holds multiple titles and responsibilities as a leader and activist in her job and community. Improving the quality of lives, especially for people of various ethnic, racial and cultural backgrounds is extremely important to her.
As director of Multicultural Affairs at River College, Sharron’s main focus is to develop, coordinate, and execute social events and programs answering cultural and educational needs of the student body and surrounding communities. It is important to Sharron that all multicultural entities feel included. If you ask Sharron what caused her to feel so strongly, she answers, “The increasing demographic change in NH, Greater Nashua, and River College was the major factor in where I am today.”
In addition to her responsibilities at River College, Sharron puts in double time as faculty, teaching two courses; Counseling (graduate level-spring 2006-present) and Social Behavioral Science (undergraduate level-spring 2001-present) and previously held a third title- coordinator of Multicultural Programs (1997-2002).
She claims that her largest accomplishment in her educational profession was her successful role in bringing "The Artifacts of Slavery” exhibit to the River College campus. This allowed students to view pieces of history from the transatlantic slave trade and the Brown V Board of Education project. She says, “We must learn to understand history and its role in our lives. History is important to whom we are; it helps us to understand where we were yesterday, where we are today and how to get there tomorrow.”
In addition, Sharron is committed to many associations. She serves as board member to the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Nashua, and is a member of the following organizations: NH Emerging Leaders in Communities of Color, New Hampshire Multicultural Student Affairs Consortium, New Hampshire Statewide Inclusive Excellence, and ACE Network OWHE: New England Networks of Women leaders in Higher Education.
Previously, she has held association positions as chairperson to Nashua's Ethnic Awareness Committee and member of the Southern New Hampshire Outreach for Black Unity, Greater Nashua NAACP and the New England Black Educators Association.
When it comes to relaxing, Sharron enjoys spending time with the people know her best: her husband, her family, and her friends. She also enjoys gardening and recently challenged herself to discover a new love for swimming.
